Rutland by Latitude 37 showcases an enduring design idea that pays tribute to mid-century design and the nearby Ranelagh estate. Taking advantage of a generous Mount Eliza block Rutland focuses on its inhabitants and how people use their homes.
The design is subtle and functional, with emphasis on indoor-outdoor living. Enveloping the swimming pool, the heart of the home, offers a seamless connection between the indoor kitchen and dining space with the outdoor alfresco and barbeque space. This creates a social way of living with a feeling of ease, a prefect compliment to the coastal location.
The simple design allows for clean lines and light filled spaces. High clerestory windows make the roof appear to float over the home and offer views of the sky, weather and surrounding treetops. Use of tall windows, rising from the floor, allow every room to flow outside and engage with the surrounding landscape creating a greater sense of spaciousness.
The home offers clever zoning for night and day use along with summer and winter, morning and afternoon. The placement of the Alfresco allows for access to both morning and afternoon sunlight while together with the living spaces stretch out to solar gain from the north. The courtyard design also protects the home from cold prevailing winter winds, while still having the ability to open-up both sides of the house for cooling in the summer. The west facing evening space at the front of the home complete with fireplace offers a warming, light filled, retreat in the winter.
Due to its costal location a large extra storage section was provided to the garage to allow for the storage of surfboards, fishing gear, bicycles etc. The clever use of a raised roof section allowed for the use of conventional heating and cooling methods concealed and protected inside the roof space.
Subtle tones, textures and colours enhance the feeling of the home as a backdrop to serve those that live in it. This all comes together to create a home that is less about ego and ‘look at me’ and more about the way humans use their homes.
