We recently sat down with Latitude 37 Interior Designer Inna Tempany and the team from CDK Stone to discuss the emerging trends in Australian bathroom design.

Clients are increasingly incorporating more natural materials

While natural stones have always been a popular choice in bathroom design, they are now being used more heavily to create a unique and aesthetically pleasing space, according to CDK Stone.

“Installing natural stone in the bathroom can instantly elevate the look of the space. Marble, Quartzite, Limestone and Granite are popular choices due to their natural beauty and timeless appeal. They provide a luxurious feel and can withstand heat and humidity, making them perfect for wet areas.”

CDK Stone’s stunning ‘New Elegant Grey Limestone’ has been used extensively throughout the bathrooms at Retreat House.

“The stone enhances the minimalistic aesthetic by providing contrast, texture, and a timeless elegance. The movement and tonal properties within the limestone complement the dark joinery and feature tiles, creating a cohesive and visually striking space with a sense of continuity and subtle sophistication,” said Inna.

Clients looking to incorporate additional warmth and texture to the space are choosing to add complementary natural materials into the design palette, with timber cabinetry and metal fixtures being popular options to create a soothing and inviting sanctuary.

Eye-catching colours and textures are becoming more common

While homeowners are still considering a simple white aesthetic in their new homes, we are also finding an increase in experimenting with bold uses of colour and unique textures, creating a one-of-a-kind custom bathroom that’s perfectly tailored to their own personal style.

“While light, neutral tones remain popular for creating a timeless look, there’s also a trend towards incorporating more colour and texture into not just bathroom design, but home design overall. Each type of stone has its own unique colour variations and patterns, allowing the homeowner to create a custom look that complements their preferred decor,” explained CDK Stone.

A personalised touch can also be achieved by thinking outside the box when using natural stones. Beyond traditional stone splashbacks and benchtops, consider marble, granite, or travertine floor tiles for an elegant atmosphere, or create a focal point in the room by installing a natural stone feature wall or stone surround.

Retreat House presents a stunning example of a stone bathroom wall, with this half-height limestone feature in the shower area. In addition to providing a striking visual contrast in the space, the ledge of the wall also offers a convenient storage solution for the end user.

Hotel-inspired features create a luxurious experience

Emerging Australian bathroom design trends reflect a mix of functionality, comfort, and style, with many seeking to create a sanctuary of comfort and relaxation. As such, elevated, hotel-inspired features are becoming increasingly popular choices for clients designing their dream homes.

Generous freestanding bathtubs continue to be a favourite with clients looking for a luxurious way to unwind after a long day, while many homeowners are also opting for double shower heads or oversized shower systems to create a spa-like experience in their bathrooms.

“Premium storage solutions that are both visually appealing and functional are a key priority for clients,” according to Inna.

“Effective storage is essential in Australian bathrooms, where space may be limited. Floating vanities, recessed shelving, and built-in cabinets are popular choices for maximizing storage without sacrificing style. Additionally, there’s a trend towards incorporating hidden storage solutions to maintain a clutter-free and organised space.”
